WEBINAR: Thermal Dispersion Technology for Aerospace and Military & Defense Applications

04 Feb WEBINAR: Thermal Dispersion Technology for Aerospace and Military & Defense Applications

We are pleased to share the latest webinar from JD Technologies Global, LLC and Fluid Components International LLC (FCI), A Brand of DwyerOmega entitled “Thermal Dispersion Technology for Aerospace and Military & Defense Applications” where FCI shares the advantages of Thermal Dispersion Technology (TDT) in Aerospace Flow and Liquid Level Sensor applications.

Flow and Liquid Level Instrumentation face extremely difficult conditions in harsh and rigorous aerospace installations.  Wide temperature and pressure swings coupled with high vibration and demanding reliability requirements test even the most ruggedly built sensors. With these concerns in mind, it is imperative that aircraft mounted sensor designs are anchored in a solid, no moving part technology to meet the challenges of airframe and system mounted installations in either liquids or gases.

This is exactly the kind of technology that the FCI flow and liquid level sensors utilize – Thermal Dispersion Technology (TDT). Designed with a hermetically sealed, stainless steel sensor element, FCI’s Flow and Liquid Level Sensors detect changes in flow and level as a function of changes in the differential temperature between a heated Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) and an unheated RTD that are securely protected by metal thermowells.

In flow sensing applications, the differential temperature between the RTDs is greatest at no flow with the heater warming a companion active RTD sensor to a higher temperature than the background fluid temperature measured by an unheated reference RTD sensor. When flow begins, the active sensor is cooled by the flowing fluid, while the reference sensor remains the temperature of the process fluid.  This reduction of differential temperature is detected by the sensor electronics as an indication of flow for a flow switch or as the actual flow rate for a flow transmitter. Changes in the fluid process temperature do not affect the accuracy of the measurement, as the reference RTD compensates for the changes in process fluid temperature. Using the TDT principle of operation, the FCI flow sensor continues to operate accurately in varying temperature and pressure conditions even under extreme vibration operation.

In liquid level sensing applications, the differential temperature is greatest in air or vapor with the heater warming a companion active RTD sensor to a higher temperature in a poorly thermally conductive gas. When the level changes and liquid covers the sensor element thermowells, the differential temperature rapidly reduces in the more thermally conductive liquid. Using the TDT principle of operation, the FCI liquid level sensor reliably indicates the change in liquid level even in changing temperature and pressure conditions in the level reservoir.

Both FCI TDT Flow and Liquid Level Sensors feature no moving part reliability with 100,000 hour+ MTBF, high vibration resistance, temperature range performance from -40F to 350+F (-40C to 175+C), pressure ranges from 5 to 6000+ PSIA (0.35 to 400 BARA), DO160 & MIL STD 710 Qualification, optional integrated 2nd output indication of process temperature, and many other aerospace friendly capabilities. All these features make FCI sensors the preferred partner for all aerospace flow and liquid level applications.
